....wait, they marketed the Rampage as a Ranger and S-10 competitor?
Who did they think they were fooling?

You could allege it was a competitor to the *only* 1/4 ton truck offering from Ford, but when GM was still offering not only an S-10 but an El Camino...

I love these things. Buddy has a shelby-swapped one and it’s an absolute riot. Two people can easily load a motorcycle in the bed without a ramp.

I mean it had more power/torque and as much payload as either, why not?

Because FWD? You can do truckstuff better with RWD

At the level these were punching at, FWD vs RWD isn’t really a valid argument.

Higher payload and drives nicer.
Can’t say mine has a higher payload anymore with 35 year old leafs. But it certainly drives nicer than any S-10 I’ve been in OR owned.

I’d love to find a GLH engine and slap it in mine . I think I’ll ride out the engine it’s got for now and when my eagle is done I think I may get an electric Warp 9 (or 2) motor for it.

I’m not saying it couldn’t do S-10 duty, just that it’s an odd move to try to cannibalize S-10 sales instead of El Camino sales. Maybe that’s the point - to force an unusual cross-shop. It’s weird, in that many people would be buying an S-10 for duties beyond its capacity and RWD-focused sorts of uses and loading it all the way to the bump stops, while having hatefully uncomfortable seats... but that’s the market segment. A Rampage just seems odd in that context.

Not sure what the El Camino / Caballero prices points were at the time. Maybe the S-10 was closer to the Rampage in dollar amount. Or maybe they wanted people to think it was more of a “real truck”, and less of an open backed car... not sure. I really like my Rampage, but I would not compare it to a truck. I’d personally compare it to an economy car for hauling stuff around. The original owner of my Rampage was an artist who needed to be able to move larger framed paintings that couldn’t fit into a car. Then it spent over a 2 decades as a summer-cabin-truck from the second owner. Which it would’ve been pretty ideal for. He regularly moved a small boat trailer and picked stuff up from the hardware store. I use it as a commuter and dirt-bike hauler.

I’ve mentioned this from time to time, but I have a work-in-progress ‘63 Ranchero project car and used to have a Rabbit pickup. I am no stranger to silly things pretending to be trucks that kind of aren’t...

A guy at work (with WAAAAAY more money than I have) just bought a fully restored 60's Ranchero. It is awesome. I have a pretty weird vehicle stable too :
‘84 Dodge Rampage = car tuck thing = trucklet.
‘ 88 AMC Eagle = wagon 4WD fuel injection = cross-over / SUV?
‘15 Husky fe350s = street legal, but not street appropriate... = still dirtbike
Wife has a ‘11 Nissan Juke = weird fun bubble car = yup
Custom Teardrop Trailer = tiny, outdoor kitchen = many lookeyloos
Got most of em in one picture even.

The most hardcore Ranchero that exists is any model from ~’67 that is on the Fairlane platform with a midblock. Pre’72, so frameless, and pre-larger Torino unibody at that. It’s nearly a first gen
Cobra Jet Mustang disguised as a truckcar.
